Best Broadcast Spreader for a Small Lawn (Up to 5,000 sq ft)

Pick a spreader by the square feet one fill covers. Handheld, push and edge-shield picks for lawns up to 5,000 sq ft, and how to spread seed evenly.

A handheld spreader runs empty halfway across a 3,000 sq ft front lawn. Scotts says its Whirl holds up to 1,500 sq ft of Scotts product, so that lawn takes two fills. For a small lawn, pick the spreader by how much ground one fill covers: a handheld for patches up to about 1,500 sq ft, and a push broadcast spreader that covers 5,000 sq ft per load for the whole yard.

Quick pick: a push broadcast spreader that covers 5,000 sq ft per load does most small lawns in one fill. Add an edge shield if the grass runs along beds, a driveway or a sidewalk.

Which spreader fits your lawn size

Up to 1,500 sq ft: handheld — the Scotts Whirl holds up to 1,500 sq ft of Scotts product per fill, per the maker. Good for bare patches and small front yards.

1,500 to 5,000 sq ft: push broadcast — a model that covers up to 5,000 sq ft per load, per the maker, does a whole small lawn in one fill.

Grass edged by beds and pavement: push with an edge shield — Scotts says the EdgeGuard on its DLX keeps product off landscaping, driveways and sidewalks.

Narrow strips: drop spreader — University of Arizona Extension says a drop spreader lets product fall straight below the hopper, not side to side.

Fills by lawn size, using each maker's coverage per fill:

1,000 sq ft — handheld 1 fill; 5,000 sq ft push 1 fill

3,000 sq ft — handheld 2 fills; push 1 fill

5,000 sq ft — handheld 4 fills; push 1 fill

Coverage is for each maker's own product; seed and other brands vary.

Not a fit: a broadcast spreader on a 3 ft strip between a walk and a flower bed. It throws past the edge. Use a drop spreader or the edge shield there.

How to measure your lawn for a spreader

Rectangles: length × width. A 50 × 100 ft back lawn is 5,000 sq ft. A 40 × 60 ft front lawn is 2,400 sq ft.

Take out what isn't grass: beds, the driveway, the house.

Pounds you need: square feet ÷ 1,000 × the bag rate. At an example rate of 4 lb per 1,000 sq ft, 5,000 sq ft takes 20 lb, or 10 lb per pass if you make two passes.

Row spacing: Arizona Extension says a rotary spreader drops the most product closest to the spreader. Space rows at the "effective swath width," where the amount drops to about half. In Arizona's example, a spreader that threw 14 ft had a 12 ft effective width.

How to spread seed and fertilizer evenly

Half rate, two directions. Arizona Extension says you can walk one direction at the full rate, or make two passes in two directions at half the rate.

Overlap the hopper, not the wheels. With a drop spreader, Arizona Extension says lining up on the wheel marks leaves a 4 to 5 inch strip with no product at each turn.

Small lawn spreader FAQ

What size spreader do I need for a 5,000 sq ft lawn? One that covers 5,000 sq ft per load does it in one fill. A handheld that holds 1,500 sq ft takes 4 fills.

Is a broadcast or drop spreader better for a small lawn? Broadcast for open grass: Arizona Extension says rotary spreaders cover more ground in less time. A drop spreader suits narrow strips.

Can I use a broadcast spreader for grass seed? Yes. Both Scotts picks are sold for grass seed and fertilizer; check the label on any other spreader. Use half rate, two passes.

What setting should I use? Start with the setting on the bag. If your model isn't listed, Arizona Extension's method is to walk a measured strip, weigh what came out and adjust.
