What Goes Under the Pavers

The base is the bigger order

A 16 by 12 ft patio is 192 square feet — about 867 of the 4×8 brick pavers with an eighth-inch joint and a 5 percent cutting allowance. Under them sits about 3.6 cubic yards of base stone at a 5 inch compacted depth, roughly 5.3 tons, plus another 0.6 yards of bedding sand.

Joint sand coverage varies

One bag may cover 100 square feet of 24×24 slabs and 30 square feet of 4×8 brick. The 50 square feet per bag here is only a starting point — swap in the figure printed on the bag you are buying.

Match Base Depth to the Load

Four to six inches of compacted base suits foot traffic; a driveway that carries vehicles needs ten to twelve. Frost depth and local practice can push that deeper, so confirm the depth with your supplier before ordering.
