Twenty bags of whole leaves are lined up by the garage, and the city takes them one week at a time. Run them through a leaf mulcher at the 11:1 ratio WORX lists for its WG430 and you're left with about 2 bags. Alabama Extension says shredding can cut leaf volume to as little as one-tenth.

Quick pick: most small yards: a corded blower-vac that also shreds (WORX WG512, 16:1 per the maker). Already raking into big piles: a stand-alone shredder.

Which leaf shredder fits your yard

Patio, beds and a small lawn: blower-vac with a shredder. It blows leaves into a pile, then sucks them into a shoulder bag already chopped. The WG512's bag holds 50 L (about 13 gallons), so it suits small jobs.

A lawn full of raked piles: stand-alone mulcher. You feed leaves into a hopper over a bag or trash can. The WG430 lists up to 53 gallons a minute.

Big trees, mulch for beds: adjustable shredder. The Flowtron sets from coarse to fine, 8:1 to 30:1, per the maker.

Thin leaves on the lawn: no new tool. Iowa State Extension says to mow them in while the layer is thin and dry, chopped small enough to fall between grass blades.

Not a fit: you only compost. Colorado State Extension says whole leaves compost better because finely chopped leaves pack down and starve the pile of oxygen.

The bag math

Bags after shredding = bags of whole leaves ÷ mulch ratio.

20 bags at 11:1 (WG430): 20 ÷ 11 = 1.8, so 2 bags.

20 bags at 16:1 (WG512): 20 ÷ 16 = 1.25, so one full bag plus a little.

20 bags at 30:1 (Flowtron, finest setting): 20 ÷ 30 = 0.7, so 1 bag.

Feed time: a 30-gallon bag at 53 gallons a minute is about 34 seconds at the maker's top rate. Twenty bags is about 11 minutes of feeding, plus the time to rake and refill.

Maker ratios are best-case numbers.

Before you buy

☐ Count your bags from last fall. Under about 10, mow them in or use a blower-vac.

☐ Find an outdoor outlet. All three picks are corded, so you need an outdoor extension cord that reaches the pile.

☐ Decide where shreds go. Beds: 2 to 4 inches of shredded leaves (see leaves to mulch). Curb: check your city's bag rules.

☐ Keep sticks, stones and trash out of the hopper or tube.

☐ Wear ear and eye protection. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders lists leaf blowers among harmful noise at home.

Leaf mulcher FAQ

Is a leaf vacuum or a leaf mulcher better?

A blower-vac is better for a patio and small lawn. A stand-alone mulcher is faster when you already have big raked piles.

How much does a leaf mulcher reduce leaves?

Makers list 11:1 to 30:1. Alabama Extension says shredding can cut volume to as little as one-tenth.

Can I shred wet leaves?

Dry leaves work best. Iowa State Extension says mowing leaves in works best when the layer is thin and dry.

Should I shred leaves for compost?

Not always. Colorado State Extension says whole leaves are better for composting.
