Best Snow Shovel for a Gravel Driveway: Poly Pusher, Plastic Blade or Cordless?

Push, don't scoop, and leave about an inch of snow over the stone. The best snow shovel for a gravel driveway, passes by driveway width, and when cordless works.

After the first storm, every shovelful from your gravel driveway comes up gray with stone. On gravel, push the snow with a plastic (poly) pusher and leave about an inch of snow over the stone. Fisher Plows, a snowplow maker, tells drivers plowing gravel to leave a buffer of about an inch of snow between the blade and the gravel, and to wait until the first snowfall sits and packs down. The American Heart Association adds that pushing or sweeping snow takes a little less exertion than lifting and throwing it.

Quick pick: a 24-inch plastic (poly) pusher, leaving about an inch of snow over the stone. Save cordless for paved or packed, frozen ground.

Which snow tool fits a gravel driveway

Short or medium driveway, light to moderate snow: 24-inch poly pusher — push in lanes, blade on the snow, not the stone.

Paved walk, porch, or a packed, frozen base: cordless power shovel — on loose stone, anything that reaches the surface throws gravel with the snow.

Long driveway, deep or wet snow: snow blower or a plow service — for plowing gravel, Fisher Plows recommends plow shoes, which help the blade float over the stone, and going slow.

Passes needed to clear the width once:

10 ft wide — 5 passes with a 24 in pusher; 10 with a 13 in power shovel

12 ft wide — 6 passes; 12 passes

16 ft wide — 8 passes; 15 passes

On a 12 × 50 ft driveway, 6 pusher lanes is 300 feet of pushing per storm.

Not a fit: a steel-edged shovel on loose gravel, or shoveling at all if you have heart disease or risk factors. The American Heart Association says to get someone else to do it.

How to measure your driveway

Width and length: measure both in feet. A 12 × 50 ft driveway is 600 sq ft.

Passes: width in inches ÷ blade width in inches, rounded up. 144 in ÷ 24 in = 6.

Snow depth: use a ruler mid-drive, away from drifts.

Gravel lost: 600 sq ft at 1 inch deep is 50 cu ft, about 1.85 cubic yards.

How to clear a gravel driveway without losing stone

Wait for a base. Fisher Plows says to wait until the first snowfall sits and packs down before plowing gravel.

Push, don't lift, and keep about an inch of snow over the stone.

Go slow. Fisher Plows says speed can really make a difference on gravel.

Stop if you feel it. The American Heart Association says to stop right away if you have chest pain or pressure, lightheadedness, or heart palpitations or an irregular heartbeat.

Spring fix: rake stones back from the lawn edge, then top up thin spots. See how to fix a gravel driveway before winter.

How do you shovel a gravel driveway without removing gravel? Wait for the first snow to pack down, leave about an inch, push instead of scooping, and go slow.

How many passes does a 12 ft driveway take? Six with a 24-inch pusher, 12 with a 13-inch power shovel.
