How Many Bags of Leaves Will I Have? Leaf Bag Calculator by Yard Size
A 2,000 sq ft lawn under 2 inches of leaves fills about 84 thirty-gallon bags, or about 9 shredded. Formula, chart by yard size and pickup limits.

The leaves are down, the lawn is 40 × 50 ft, and the store sells paper bags in packs of 25. Under a 2-inch layer, that lawn holds about 333 cubic feet of loose leaves, enough for about 84 thirty-gallon bags. Shred them first and Alabama Extension's figure, as little as one-tenth the volume, brings it near 9.
Quick pick: measure the lawn, guess the leaf depth, then bags = sq ft × inches ÷ 12 ÷ 4. Shredding cuts that by up to 10 times.
Rule of thumb: a 30-gallon bag holds about 4 cubic feet (30 × 0.1337 = 4.01).
How many leaf bags by yard size
30-gallon bags of loose, whole leaves at 1 / 2 / 4 inches deep, rounded up. In brackets: about one-tenth the bags if shredded.
500 sq ft (20 × 25 ft): 11 / 21 / 42 bags (2 / 3 / 5)
1,000 sq ft (25 × 40 ft): 21 / 42 / 84 bags (3 / 5 / 9)
2,000 sq ft (40 × 50 ft): 42 / 84 / 167 bags (5 / 9 / 17)
5,000 sq ft (50 × 100 ft): 104 / 208 / 416 bags (11 / 21 / 42)
These are ceilings. Leaves packed down by hand fit more per bag than their loose depth on the lawn suggests.
The math, step by step
☐ Area: length × width of the leaf-covered part. 40 × 50 = 2,000 sq ft.
☐ Depth: push a ruler into the layer in three spots and average. Say 2 inches.
☐ Cubic feet = area × inches ÷ 12. 2,000 × 2 ÷ 12 = 333 cu ft.
☐ Bags = cubic feet ÷ 4.01. 333 ÷ 4.01 = 83.1, so 84 bags.
☐ Packs = bags ÷ pack size. 84 ÷ 25 = 3.4, so 4 packs of 25.
☐ Season: most trees drop over several weeks. Measure after each big drop, not once.
Cut the bag count
Mow thin layers in. Iowa State Extension says mowing works best when the leaf layer is thin and dry, so mow often in the fall. Chop until the pieces fall between the grass blades. Where little or no grass shows, collect them.
Shred the rest. Alabama Extension says shredding can cut leaf volume to as little as one-tenth. A mulching mower, a blower-vac or a stand-alone shredder all do it.
Keep some. Shredded leaves make free bed mulch; see how many bags a bed takes in leaves to mulch. Colorado State Extension says whole leaves are better than chopped ones for a compost pile.
Not a fit: a thin layer with grass still showing. Iowa State Extension says to mow it in, so you need no bags for it.
Pickup limits: how many bags can you put out?
It depends on your city, so check its yard waste page before you fill 84 bags. One example: Atlanta takes paper yard-trimming bags only, up to 20 per collection, each 35 lb or less; 21 or more bags need a bulk pickup (Atlanta News First, Oct. 14, 2026).
At 20 a week, 84 bags is 5 pickups (84 ÷ 20 = 4.2). Shredded, about 9 bags fit in one.
Many cities don't take plastic, so buy paper unless yours says otherwise.

Leaf bag FAQ
How many leaves fit in a 30-gallon bag?
About 4 cubic feet: the leaves from 24 sq ft of lawn under a 2-inch layer (24 × 2 ÷ 12 = 4).
How many bags of leaves does one tree make?
It depends on the tree. Measure the area under it and the depth, then use the formula above.
Can I put leaves in plastic bags?
Check your city. Atlanta, for example, won't take yard trimmings in plastic bags.
