When to Stop Mowing Your Lawn in Fall: Last Cut Height by Grass Type
Stop when the grass stops growing, not on a date. Last-cut height by grass type, where Ohio State and Wisconsin disagree, and how to handle leaves.
11/2/20264 min read
Ohio State says cut the lawn short before winter. Wisconsin says the last cut doesn't need to be, and both are trying to prevent snow mold. Here's what holds either way: stop when the grass stops growing, not on a set date. Cool-season lawns finish at 2 to 3.5 inches. Warm-season lawns stop before or at dormancy.
Quick pick: your usual height until growth stops, ½ inch lower only if snow mold keeps coming back.

How to tell the grass has stopped
Wisconsin Extension: mow as needed until top growth stops.
Purdue: mowing right up to dormancy mulches late leaves and may help prevent snow mold.
Our test: stand a ruler in one spot after a mow and read it a week later. No change means you're done.
How short for the last cut? The sources split
Ohio State, 2023: 3 to 3½ inches in summer, then 2 to 2½ going into winter, especially with a history of snow mold.
Wisconsin Extension: the final mow needn't be excessively short. UW-Madison's Paul Koch keeps the same height to the end, typically 2½ to 3½ inches.
Maryland Extension: ½ inch shorter than usual on the final cut of tall fescue.
Wisconsin's warning: don't go into winter tall. Koch says grass at 4 to 6 inches can lay over and trap moisture and heat.
Our read: take ½ inch off only if you've seen snow mold.
Last-cut height by grass
Bluegrass, ryegrass, fine fescue: Ohio State's range is 2 to 4 inches.
Tall fescue: 2.5 to 4 inches. Finish near 2½ to 3.
Bermuda: NC State raises the mower ½ inch in fall, then mows until several weeks before the first expected frost.
Zoysia: Maryland says it goes dormant after the first frost. Stop then.
Not a fit: a short last cut on a warm-season lawn. NC State raises the mower in fall.
If the lawn got too tall
Ohio State's rule: never remove more than a third of the blade at once.
6 inches: cut to 4, then 2.7.
4.5 inches: cut to 3, then 2½.
Leaves before the last cut
Under 2 inches: mow them in. Purdue says several rotary mower passes can do it.
Over 2 inches: Ohio State says remove them or mulch heavily.
Don't leave them all winter: Wisconsin says they can smother grass. See our leaves to mulch guide.
The last feeding
Purdue: the first few weeks of November, near or after the last mowing, while the lawn is still green.
Ohio State: late November isn't recommended.
The math: 0.5 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft from a 24-0-6 bag is about 2.1 lb. A 5,000 sq ft lawn takes about 10.4 lb. See fall lawn fertilizer.
Warm-season lawns: skip it. Maryland says zoysia won't need it.
Frost days
Purdue says always avoid mowing or leaf removal on frost-covered or frozen turf.
