A new walk-behind spreader, a 50-pound bag of rock salt, and a manual that says not to put one in the other. Chapin's manual for its 80-pound residential SaltPro reads: "This spreader is NOT recommended for use with rock salt." Pick the spreader by what's in the bag first.

Quick pick: the Chapin SaltPro 88000A walk-behind for ice melt, halite or small pellets. Rock salt on a driveway: the Scotts EdgeGuard DLX (Scotts says screened rock salt).

Match the spreader to the bag

Chapin sorts by grain size, not the word "salt."

Small grains and pellets: Chapin's 88000A page and the 8003A listing recommend them for salt, halite and potassium, magnesium or calcium chloride, "small and pelletized."

Not for: rock salt, sand or sand mixes.

Size: the 8003A listing pitches its 65 lb hopper for small driveways and short walks; the 88000A holds 80 lb.

If the bag says rock salt

Chapin's residential line: the 88000A, 8003A and 8705A all say no.

Chapin's 88800B contractor model: "Built for rock salt," per its page.

Hand shaker: Chapin's 64 oz 8740A takes rock salt or sand for steps, per Chapin.

Scotts EdgeGuard DLX: Scotts' Canadian page for the DLX (76232B) says ice melt and screened rock salt; the U.S. listing says salt or ice melt.

Set it to spread less

Shovel first: the more snow you clear, the less salt you need, says the Rice Creek Watershed District's smart salting card.

Setting and pace: the bag's setting, at about 3 mph, per Chapin's 88000A manual.

Spacing: 1 to 2 inches between particles is usually enough, per the card.

Too cold: salt doesn't melt ice on pavement below 15°F, the card says. Use sand or another de-icer.

Pounds per storm: how much ice melt you need.

Rinse it after every storm

Chapin's 88000A manual:

☐ Empty the hopper when you finish.

☐ Hose it down after each use, not straight at the gearbox. No power washer.

☐ Let it dry before you store it.

Why: Chapin's 88300B manual says wet magnesium chloride can rust stainless or mild steel in days, calcium chloride in weeks, rock salt in a couple of months. Dog in the house? Read pet-safe ice melt.

Not a fit: rock salt or sand in the 88000A, 8003A or 8705A. Lawn spreaders: best broadcast spreader for a small lawn.
