Your 2,000 sq ft lawn under an inch of leaves is about 167 cubic feet of them. Push a 21-inch sweeper with a 3.5 cu ft bag and that is 48 trips to the leaf pile; a 26-inch with a 7 cu ft bag cuts it to 24. Sweep weekly while the layer is a quarter inch deep and dry, and the 7 cu ft bag needs 6.

Quick pick: a 26-inch push sweeper with a 7 cu ft bag, run weekly on dry leaves. Tow-behind only if you already ride a lawn tractor.

How many times you'll dump the hopper

The math: lawn sq ft × leaf depth in inches ÷ 12 = cubic feet of loose leaves. Divide by the hopper size.

1,000 sq ft, 1 inch (83 cu ft): 24 dumps at 3.5 cu ft, 12 at 7, 7 at 12.

2,000 sq ft, 1 inch (167 cu ft): 48, 24 and 14.

5,000 sq ft, 1 inch (417 cu ft): 120, 60 and 35.

10,000 sq ft, 1 inch (833 cu ft): 239, 120 and 70.

Rounded up, for loose leaves. To count bags, see how many leaf bags you need.

Push or tow-behind

Push, 21 to 26 in: 3.2 to 7 cu ft bags, 14 to 33 lb (Earthwise 21 in to VEVOR 26 in), per the listings below.

Tow-behind, 42 in: a 12 cu ft hopper with a dump rope you pull from the seat. It needs a lawn tractor, riding mower or ATV.

Walking: sq ft ÷ sweep width in feet, before overlap. A 2,000 sq ft lawn is about 1,143 ft with a 21-inch sweeper, 923 ft with a 26-inch.

Not a fit: mostly patio and walk; see the best cordless leaf blower for a small yard.

When a sweeper works

Dry: Earthwise says wet leaves, tall grass, uneven ground, sticks, nuts and pinecones can reduce pickup.

Often: Iowa State Extension says leaves left on a lawn keep the grass from making and storing food before winter.

Brush height: Agri-Fab's manual says brushes 1/2 inch down into the grass. Earthwise says too low and the wheels can slide instead of turning the brushes.

Empty it: Agri-Fab says dump after each use; damp leaves left in the hopper for long damage it.

Wet leaves, acorns and pine needles

Wet, matted leaves: rake them onto a tarp, or wait for a dry day.

Acorns: none of the five listings below claims acorns. For acorns, plan on a rake or a nut gatherer.

Pine needles: VEVOR and MAXLANDER list them; Earthwise says pickup may be inconsistent.

Thin and dry: Iowa State says mowing leaves in works best then. No sweeper needed.

What to do with a full hopper

Shred it: Alabama Extension says shredding can cut leaf volume to as little as one-tenth. See the best leaf mulcher or vacuum shredder.

Mulch with it: Alabama Extension calls leaves an excellent mulch for outdoor plants and shrubs.
